Firouzja's First

Alireza Firouzja had drawn and lost to Magnus Carlsen in classical chess several times since bursting into the world's top ten as a teenager, but round one of the 2026 Norway Chess tournament in Oslo produced his first classical win over Carlsen, according to contemporary tournament coverage.
The game followed a Queen's Gambit Declined structure, and Firouzja, with the white pieces, kept a small but persistent edge through the middlegame before Carlsen's position came apart under pressure on the queenside. By the time Carlsen's rook was chased into passivity with 21.Rxa6, White's advantage had become close to decisive, and Firouzja's pieces slowly took over the board. Carlsen resigned on move 38.
Carlsen won the return game between the two players later in the same event, so the head to head rivalry remains competitive overall, but Firouzja's win here was reported at the time as a symbolic moment: at 22, he had gone from prodigy to a player capable of beating the most dominant player of the previous decade in a straight classical game.
